Network mapping is in no way a new technology, but these days it is needed more than ever, especially considering the size of certain networks in this day and age. It is no surprise whatsoever what so many companies are currently seeking out decent network mapping software, though there are still some that are confused as to what it does.

Network Mapping Software – When Networks Get Large, You Need The Right Software

As we said before, networks can become very large, especially in corporate settings, and with that being the case, you need to know where each and every machine is. In other words this is a great way to find out whether or not someone is using your network to host an e-mail server on the third floor.

That being said, you’re probably wondering what type of network mapping software you will want to purchase, and there are actually quite a few you might consider. When it comes right down to it however, you have two basic choices, those being Active Probing and AS PATH Inference.

If you’re looking to use the active probing technique, then you will need to become familiar with traceroute style probing as it utilizes probes which report back IP forwarding paths to the destination address. Active Probing is without a doubt the most preferred method of network mapping though there have been a few times in which it has managed to infer false topologies as a result of the load balancing.

Path inference utilizes BGP collectors that gather their information from routing updates as well as tables, and this information is reported publicly. This particular method is becoming increasingly popular and support for this method has increased exponentially.

Network Mapping Software – A Very Powerful Innovation

Network mapping software is without a doubt one of the most important innovations of our time, and the ability to track the progression of a network will help one to understand not only what type of resources are actually being used, but also where improvements might be made. In other words, an otherwise expensive procedure can be simplified, and you will undoubtedly find yourself looking at information which you could have only seen in person previously.

In the end the method you use will be up to you, and as we said before, there are plenty of different network mapping software packages available. Search the internet or speak with a software vendor. It is incredibly important for you to find a decent piece of network mapping software so that you can gain an accurate view of your setup, and so that you can effect the needed changes. It might sound a bit difficult at first, and it may very well be, but network mapping software certainly takes the sting out of any transitions that you will need to make both now and in the future.

Networks are definitely not new to the computer scene, and there are several different network types to take into consideration when you are building one. In addition to that it is important for you to know your network topology before you attempt to utilize any network mapping software. That being said, let’s talk a bit about the different types of network mapping software so that you can determine what you have and how you might effect changes to it if need be. The first type we will discuss is the most common, the server based network.

A server based network is fairly simple as you will be dealing with a number of different computers connected to a central server. There could of course be multiple servers either standing alone or in a rack configuration, and these servers could host applications for the entire network. There are many different applications to consider when it comes to the server based network. For instance some will choose to utilize it as a file server which would permit the users to download basic files and applications such as shared documents or even word processors. The only problem with his type of network however is that when the server is terminated or dies, you will more than likely lose access to the information unless there is a backup server.

That scenario will not happen however if you were to utilize a peer to peer network. In this type of network topology you would find that there is no central server and all of the necessary files are held on each computer. If one computer drops off of the network there is typically no consequence other than the loss of files. Server and Peer to Peer however are just network examples, and they are not part of the major three.

The Ring Network is also known as a Token Ring. This type of network topology is outdated, but that certainly doesn’t mean it isn’t used anymore. That being said, it should be noted that some businesses will use the Token Ring and you may very well be one of them, though a Star Network is one of the more common. In a star network all of the computers revolve around a central hub, and that hub can communicate with other hubs throughout the network. Though it may not be incredibly apparent, this type of network topology is actually very common.

A bus network is uncommon but still used occasionally. This is a network that must have a termination point at both ends, but if you want to extend the network you can use a barrel connector. These are the three major types of network topology seen in the business and personal world. That being said, you will need to study the different topologies and determine which would work best for your business. The sky is the limit when it comes to network configurations.

Network Topology: Physical Interconnection Of A Computer Network

Share Network topology is the actual physical interconnection of the components of a personal computer network. Broadly there are two kinds of elements in personal computer networks – node and link. Even in identical topologies, distances among nodes, bodily interconnections, information transmission rates, and/or signal kinds may possibly vary from every other. Exclusively in Local [...]

Why You Should Use Network Mapping Software

Share This map has several applications that are beneficial for an organization, these kinds of as monitoring, analyzing, and troubleshooting. As an example, a map from the network might be employed to assist IT pros in finding any bottlenecks or single points of failure. This diagram comes in very handy in proving compliance with regulations, [...]
